Brush Mode - by Gr3atWhite
http://www.hitmanassassins.com/
Start off with your room, or get to where you want your stairs in your map. In this tutorial I have started with a 20x20x20 room and i've made a bending tunnel spanning from the room ( I thought id take some time and make it an arched one too as im well known for my perfect vertexing )
Now, get your brush cutter and place the first box of your stairway. Make sure the first brush you make is the top stair and it is all lined up perfectly on the grid. As shown:
Now to make the second stair. Move your cutter along-side the brush you just made and decrease the height of the cutter by about .50 ( for example if the first stair was 10, the new brush needs to be 9.50. My height was 9 so my new height is 8.50 ) Now we have this:
Keep repeating the last step, decreasing by no more than about .80 ( you will find out why later in the tutorial ) .... until you get to the bottom of your stairs like this:
Now.. I bet your thinking "man thats gotta be a bumpy ride" .... think again. Now we have to create the invisible face for the player model to move down securely and non-bumpily? ... here goes.
In Brush mode, change the brush cutter properties to Height: 0.01 and the Width and Depth to fit the length and width of your stairs.
Now this is a Face-Sized brush. ( DONT use the Face brush property, just use a box with 0.01 height smile.gif ). Now to rotate this over the stairway. You walk down stairs at a 45 degree angle, so set your "Rotate By" property to 45 degrees. Be patient, this takes quite a while to actually rotate the face over the stairs properly. Keep adjusting the rotation angles to suit, and when rotating over the stairs make sure your facing down and then using R + Arrow Keys to rotate.
When it is all rotated, fit the face over the top of your stairs as close as you can without the face actually touching the stair brushes. You may need to add an extra face brush at the top of this face as it might get a little bumpy at the top of the stairs. I have added one of these into mine ( see next screenshot in a minute ).
Now go to texture mode and texture this face with the Invisible Texture ( Found in the "Effects" category. Any invisible texture will do but I reccoment the Solid one ( sld_invisible01.tga ). Scale down ( S + DOWN ARROWS ) three or four time to avoid PS2's. Texture the faces and this is what mine looks like so far:
Thats it. All done. Now save pack and play your level. I have included the file I worked with incase you wanna take a look over it
