Stairs - Face Mode
MAP

Face Mode - by RF Grim Reaper
I have a method which kind of combines the two. The joy that is Face Mode!.

This method is a little expensive face-wise (as most stairs are), but you can get some very good results smile.gif

I always find the best way to map and get things aligned is to never go below 0.125 units and copy and paste simple brushes ( so the new ones are aligned to the old ).

Anyway, you start off in the same way as White does, only you use one brush wink.gif:

The brush should be:
Solid
Height: 0.250
Width: 0.50
Depth: 8.00

Now go to face mode, select the bottom face of the small brush and with the units set to 0.25. Press the extrude button until the face reaches the floor. You have to make sure that it is exactly level with the floor. It should be unless you use the smaller or none integer values for sizes.

Now select all of the faces except the top one on the side of the brush ( the side which will be the direction down the stairs ).

Now set the units to 0.50 and press extrude. Deselect all the faces and reselect all of the faces you extruded except the top one. Again extrude by 0.50. Repeat this until you've extruded the bottom face on its own. At this point I would advise texturing them if you're going to bend the brush later.

Now for making them smooth, I hate using face brushes or really thin brushes for ramps since they are fiddly. I use your basic box and then alter the shape a little:

I built the box under the room to give space to work. Using vertex mode I moved the top right corner ( in the front view ) until it was on the top left corner of the first step. That sounds confusing but I think the picture gives a good indication of what I mean. In the above picture I copied and pasted the brush and moved it below the stairs so you can see the shape.

Basially the brush should look like this at the top and bottom of the stairs:

Once the slope is in position texture it using a sld_invisible texture in the effects category and set it to a detail brush.

Now that's ok if you want a straight stairway but what if you want a curved one? And you want the slope brush to curve too?

Well you need to build divisions into the slope brush - one at each step then bend both the stairs and the slope around the Y axis and along the X axis by however many degrees you want. This is the advantage of using a box for your slope rather than a flat angled brush or a face, you can easily split it along the slope. Be warned though, this method uses alot of faces but I think it gives the best result if you are creating a curved stair smile.gif

I don't know any other way of getting stairs ( you can smoothy walk up ) to look like this, do you? ;)
